The son of Kealiiokaloa (Mo'i, King of Hawaii), he was never raised to the throne becausehe was still young when his father died and his older brother Keawenui-a-Umi conspired to raise himself to the kingship instead. This incited a rebellion among the six district chiefs against Keawenui-a-Umi. They lost and Keawenui-a-Umi replaced all the defeated district chiefs (alii-ai-moku) with members of his own family.
