-My birth father lived in Santa Clara and San Jose much of his life and he, too, was an alcoholic.  My mother (also Catholic) divorced him when we were little and so I didn't get to know him until I was in my early teens.  Probably because I didn't experience first hand living with him as an alcoholic (at least as far as I can remember), I didn't have any issues with him and loved and respected him very much.  He was a commercial artist mostly doing outdoor advertising around the Bay area.  I don't know about your dad, but for mine, there wasn't the sensitivity or understanding about alcoholism that we've seen develop in the last twenty or so years. There was a lot of derision and anger towards him.   Not that that is an excuse for him.....he was unable to ever  take responsibility for his drinking or get help for it.  He tried to stay sober when Terri and I visited him, but there were several times when I had to care for him in that condition and it wasn't pleasant.786
