54-Here's a picture of my grandmother Rachael taken in her yard at Waimea, Kamuela, Hawaii. Besides an array of fruits and vegetables, there was, and still exists, a variety of flowers including orchids, hydrangeas, cigar and akulikuli (ice flower). There were large macadamia and avocado trees as well as several large american plum trees from which grandma made delicious pickled plums that the grandkids enjoyed. She enjoyed her plants. Grandma Rachael was a great baker. She baked fresh bread, sweet rolls and doughnuts for her family and friends. My Dad always praised his mom's baked goodies and passed on to us his love for fresh bread. Another favorite was her oxtail stew which she taught my mother to make for us. Grandma Rachael worked hard. She helped my grandfather with the running of the ranch and would clean the fish he caught with his throw net and spear. While my grandfather went fishing, grandma would spread out the wash on the kiawe branches to dry under the Kawaihae sun. The warmth of the sun and the sea was a welcome respite from the chill of Waimea. In later years, my grandparents liked to travel to Honolulu and the mainland to visit their children and grandchildren.
